Just a 35-45 minute drive from Uvita Centro, and yet a world away in terms of culture and environment, the very popular (and very fun) coffee tour at Cafe Don Emilio is one of the most authentic and educational Costa Rica experiences that you will find in all of Costa Rica. The tour is led by Denier, who is the son of Emilio and has worked in every aspect of coffee production for many years. In this two to three hour coffee tour you will learn all about the process of growing and processing coffee, you will take a short walk around the plantation to inspect the coffee plants, see the coffee bean drying areas and even take part in the separation of the coffee husks through a unique natural process.
Returning inside you will have the chance to witness the roasting process and learn about the way coffee is graded. You soon will understand why this local coffee is so much more tasty and healthier for you than the coffee you get from the stores. There is an option for lunch and it should be noted that Rita is a very good cook. If you are lucky they may even have some banana bread or a well prepared Pineapple for you to sample.
There are tours available at 10am and 2pm every day except Wednesdays and Saturdays when Denier is at El Mercado, The farmers Market in Uvita. You will be able to buy freshly roasted coffee after the tour.A 4×4 is required to make the 35 minute drive to the plantation, if you don’t want to drive you can take one of Uvita’s sturdy 4×4 Taxis to get you there.
